About Me

Welcome to Kindergarten! I am excited to have you in my class this year! My name is Laura Vanckhoven and this is my fourth year teaching Kindergarten at Giesinger Elementary. I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in elementary education EC-6. I have been married to my wonderful husband for six years and we have a two year old, Asher! In my free time I enjoy being with my family and reading. I look forward to this new school year and working with you and your child!

In your child's Daily Folder, there is a homework calendar for each month. Please complete and color in each day of the month.
 I also send home reading books Monday-Thursday. (This will begin in October) Please sign the reading log and return every day!

What We Are Learning

Language Arts: We are working on informational/expository texts. Lullabies and Poetry and word families and diagraphs.
Math: This month we will be working on more addition and subtraction
Science: We are learning about spring, plant life cycle, and pets.    
Social Studies: Our main focus is Presidents and Texas.

Helping At Home

I encourage you to read each night with your child. Some things to consider when reading with your child:

  • Left to Right reading
  • Picture Clues
  • Point to title
  • Recognize and read sight words
  • Predicting
  • Concept of print (spacing, captilization, punctuation)
  • Retelling a story using sequencing
  • Letter and sound recognition
